What is Executive Function?

3 Clock Hours Early Childhood Education Training

Rodney's Day and What it Takes

Page 8

Rodney has Executive Function Disorder (EFD).
Tasks that take his friends mere seconds to complete often take Rodney an hour or more. This is because he has trouble recalling previously learned information, using working memory, managing his time, and filtering out distractions. Effectively, Rodney’s brain creates a perfect storm of chaos that is very difficult for him to control without support.

A typical morning routine takes all of those previously mentioned skills and if a child is like Rodney and doesn’t have success with these skills they are likely to be fighting an uphill battle each and every morning. It can be stressful and frustrating both for Rodney and the people who care about him.
Rodney's brain works differently than other kids his age and it is hard to say why, though brains and the way they work are always flexible. This means that Rodney may be able to work on some of his bigger executive function challenges in many ways and eventually they may not be challenges at all. If the adults in his life can take the time to understand what his strengths are and help him to use those to his benefit, Rodney could curb many of the challenges that really bother him during everyday tasks.
