Common Questions and Comments

"There's a child in my class who will not sit at circle time at all. Not even for a minute. He is 3 and is so easily distracted. I think he has Executive Function Disorder. How do I help him?"
– Emerson
It is important first, to consider what is developmentally appropriate and then consider executive function stages throughout development. Next, consider where the child falls in these categories. It is most likely that he does not have Executive Function Disorder but instead is just a busy 3 year-old child. Still, I recommend revisiting the following pages from the training:

  • Page 13. Helping Executive Function

"I thought that executive function usually occurred only with a learning disability or other impairment."
-
ShaShaRi
Not necessarily! We do often see things such as ADHD and EFD coexist but the diagnosis of one doesn't dictate the existence of another by any means. One reason this is often assumed is because EFD symptoms can be very similar or the same as other symptoms.
